    McKesson settles Average Wholesale Price litigation for $350M
    McKesson Corp (San Francisco, CA) reached an agreement to settle all private party claims relating to First DataBank’s published drug reimbursement benchmarks, commonly referred to as Average Wholesale Prices (AWPs), for $350 million. The settlement terms are subject to final court approval and include a denial of liability of any kind. McKesson will record a reserve for outstanding and expected future AWP-related claims by public entities, which is currently estimated to be $143 million. The settlement and estimated reserve will result in a pre-tax, non-cash charge in McKesson's third quarter, ended December 31, 2008, of $493 million, or $311 million after-tax, approximately $1.14 per basic share. This charge is not expected to have any material impact on McKesson’s ability to continue to pursue and execute its business plans.

    Medtronic launches new device for treatment of aortic aneurysm
    Medtronic Inc (Minneapolis, MN) announced the U.S. launch of the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft on the Xcelerant Hydro Delivery System. Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) involves the navigation of a stent graft, via the body’s arteries, to the aorta. The stent graft is then deployed to create a reinforced tube within the aorta. The Xcelerant Hydro Delivery System features a hydrophilic coating which attracts and holds water at the device surface to reduce friction. This coating is designed to aid navigation through the femoral and iliac arteries en route to the aorta. Additional information is available at www.medtronic.com.

    AHA releases report detailing economic effects to healthcare industry
    The AHA (Chicago, IL) released a report that finds the ailing economy is affecting U.S. hospitals. Richard Umbdenstock, the association's president and CEO, says the healthcare industry is being hit hard because many hospitals were already struggling due to pressures including government programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, not paying the full cost of treatment. The reports findings are based on an AHA survey about conditions over the past three months that drew responses from 736 hospitals. The report also uses figures from the July-September 2008 period collected from 557 hospitals that send quarterly reports to a central system run by the Colorado Hospital Association (Denver, CO). Key findings include the following:

  • 67 percent of hospitals saw some drop in elective procedures; six percent saw a significant drop;
  • 63 percent saw some decline in overall admissions; nine percent saw a bigger drop;
  • Inpatient and outpatient surgeries and emergency department visits were all down roughly one percent in Q3 2008;
  • Half of hospitals have seen a moderate or significant jump in uncompensated care, with the jump averaging eight percent;
  • Total profit margin at the Database hospitals dropped from an average 6.1 percent in 2007's third quarter to an average loss of 1.6 percent in 2008's third quarter;
  • 56 percent of hospitals are reconsidering or postponing renovations or expansions, and about 40 percent are delaying improvements to information technology or other equipment.
